History

The story of Dublin City Council Culture Company began back in 2015, when Dublin was preparing its bid to be considered for European Capital of Culture 2020. While the bid was not successful, the work to develop it lit a creative spark. People in the city were talking. They shared stories and ideas over cups of tea. They made plans - and then projects - and together we found a new way of working.

Dublin’s Culture Connects, an initiative of Dublin City Council, grew from this work and in 2016 it began to trial some of the ideas and values developed during the bid process. The work of Dublin’s Culture Connects focused on developing cultural programmes based on the values of participation, partnership, relevance, capacity building and quality. At the heart of all of this work was a mission to engage with people and communities throughout the city through conversation and culture.

In 2016 Dublin’s Culture Connects piloted a number of programmes including The National Neighbourhood, Fundraising Fellowship Dublin, EU Lab, Cultural Audit & Map. Some of these programmes continue today and some have evolved, but all have left a legacy on the work of Dublin City Council Culture Company.

Dublin City Council Culture Company builds on the work of Dublin’s Culture Connects (2016-2018) and in line with Dublin City Council’s cultural strategy (2016-2021). Our programmes and projects reflect our belief that when people feel connected to their communities they feel safer and stronger, and are healthier.
