How we work: Education and Learning

Our Education and Learning programmes create new ways for children and young people to access and explore culture and heritage.

These are across the Culture Company, through our buildings at 14 Henrietta Street and Richmond Barracks, and also through our citywide programming.

At 14 Henrietta Street, our guided tours are family-friendly, and bring visitors through the 300 year history of the building, from Georgian to tenement times. We also have tailored tours for primary and secondary school groups.

As well as this, our free online teaching resources can be used in the classroom either before or after a visit. These are available in English and as Gaeilge and include photos, video clips, oral history excerpts, and other historical sources.

Families can join us for our free interactive workshops every midterm. These are based around different aspects of the museum and are designed to complement the guided tour.

At Richmond Barracks, children and young people can take part in a huge variety of free workshops. These range from sketching, arts and crafts, to gardening and biodiversity. We also offer guided school tours of the nearby Goldenbridge Cemetery, Ireland’s first garden cemetery and non-denominational burial ground, founded by Daniel O’Connell almost 200 years ago.

Our Historians in Residence work across the city to encourage local people to engage with history. The Historian in Residence for Children particularly focuses on working with children and young people, through interactive workshops and projects with schools and other groups. This includes ongoing projects throughout the year as well a special children’s programme within the Dublin Festival of History.

To further the reach of our engagement with children and young people, in 2025 we ran ‘Hands-on History’, a summer course for primary school teachers. On the course, the teachers visited our buildings and tried out some of our activities, getting a taste of the many ways the Culture Company programmes can be used to help with the teaching of history. Details of our 2026 summer course for teachers will be available in the coming months.

Our Education and Learning programmes are responsive, based on listening to the interests and ideas of the people we work with. The ‘learning’ comes as much from what we learn from participants as what they learn through our programmes. We do this through gathering feedback from young people, co-creating projects with them, and through other listening methods.

We also work with schools through our Tea & Chats programme, running workshops that are designed to listen to the views of young people on what matters to them. This in turn helps us to programme what we do across the company with children and young people, ensuring our work is people-focused.

If you would like to participate in any of our Education and Learning programmes, we’d love to hear from you. You can contact Dervilia at education@dublincitycouncilculturecompany.ie.
