Summer course for Primary School teachers : Hands-on History

Decorative Education and Learning A group of teachers stand in the garden of the Chester Beatty at Dublin Castle 1

This July we invite primary school teachers to join us for a five day Department of Education and EPV-approved summer course to explore our projects and programmes and the ways they can be used to teach history.

Our work with schools includes school tours, teacher resources, history workshops and collaborative history projects. Our projects and programmes for schools, including at 14 Henrietta Street, Richmond Barracks, and across the city with our Historian in Residence for Children, were all developed with and for children.

It’s an ongoing, iterative process, as we continue to have these conversations with children in order to make improvements and develop new projects. We also gather feedback from teachers throughout this process, and make sure we are linking our content to the school curriculum.

From all of these ideas we create interactive, engaging history programmes for primary schools, designed to be as inclusive and fun as possible. On our primary teacher summer course, we’ll be taking part in some of these tours, workshops and activities. Primary teachers will be finding out about the Culture Company buildings and resources they can use in their history teaching.

They’ll have a go at doing their own research in preparation for teaching local history, and they’ll also get a chance to try out different types of interactive history workshops that can be adapted for different history topics and levels.

This year's course

The course runs from Monday 20 July to Friday 24 July. The venues will be 14 Henrietta Street, Dublin 1, Richmond Barracks, Dublin 8, and the Central Library also in Dublin 1.

The course fee is €65, including all tours, resources and materials.

Feedback from August 2025

Participants in the course we ran in August 2025 gave us this feedback:

“It was one of the best courses I have done, very knowledgeable and enthusiastic teachers, fascinating tours, venues and ideas”

“An excellent, well thought out and well delivered course. The information was really useful and relevant. I liked that there was time for us to try things out - research, crafts, games etc. It was very well paced and had great variety.”

“I really enjoyed the mix of activities - it was enjoyable and useful as someone who has an interest in history as well as being useful in my role as a teacher. The facilitators were knowledgeable, approachable and good fun! Thank you for a fantastic week!”

On the course, the teachers went on guided tours, took part in many interactive history workshops and games, and also had a chance to do their own local history research. They left with lots of new ideas for places to visit with classes, resources they can use in the classroom, new ideas for activity-based learning, and experience of undertaking history research.

They also had lots of fun meeting likeminded teachers and sharing really interesting ideas for ways to teach history.

It was a fantastic week for everyone who attended as we explored the history of Dublin and the ways we can make history a fun and engaging subject.
